LakmÈ Fashion Week 2017 offered a variety of talent in terms of design and ingenuity, just in time for the summer. In my opinion, five distinctive design houses produced the best collections of the season. From the dreamy pastels of Eka to the bold mix of colours from Nishka Lulla, Outhouse and Rara Avis to the muted play of dark and light with Amrich, there is something for everyone this season.
Nishka Lulla
Nishka Lulla presented her Spring/Summer 2017 collection on day 3 of LakmÈ Fashion Week. Her collection consisted of a lot of monochrome colours, black and white along with a pop of hot pink; butterflies and flowers brought a glam spin to the boho-chic style on the ramp. A baby pink dress lined with a Schiaparelli pink was reminiscent to me of an Oscar-wining Gwyneth Paltrow.
The 3D butterfly motifs in pop-coloured iridescent sequins and a running theme of the quintessentially Indian mogra flower added to the cute sexiness that characterised the collection.
"Abacus": Rara Avis
Sonal Verma's collection is a sharp edit of super-fine cottons, coated linens and cruise stripes. The colours are kept basic and primary to cut out the confusion and keep the look simple and crisp for summer. The silhouettes are buoyant and voluminous, though, and the outcome is a visually appealing experience. The collection includes easy dresses, shirt-style maxis, flared pants and sleeves that take you back to the '70s. The Abacus collection adds that much-needed fun to any wardrobe.
Eka
Designer Rina Singh's latest collection is a fusion of vintage watercolour wallpaper-inspired block prints, laundered tablecloth linen checks, floral chintzy prints with distressed finish, traditional lace inlays and delicate cross-stitch embroidery. The feeling is of relaxed styling with feminine underpinnings as chintzy pastels mix with bright overlays, white linens and soft cottons. It's just perfect for summer.
Duster coat overlayers in cotton with crocheted hems, traditional lace-panelled summer dresses, boxy dresses in faded gingham checks paired with lacy sleep-in culottes, crop linen pants with stripes... they together create a defined and quirky aesthetic. This collection is a romantic mix of Indian-inspired western clothes with a hint of nonchalant Parisian flare.
"IMAGO": Outhouse Jewellery
IMAGO aims to spread the message of inner strength through the narrative of the caterpillar's transformation into a butterfly. It showcases this skillfully through cocoon and butterfly motifs, cast and hand-finished in metal, experimenting with 22 carat rose gold and gunmetal plating. The aesthetic is a play between exquisite Swarovski crystals like the Maison Margiela crystalactite and Jean Paul Gaultier's Kaput crystal in scintillating colours of vitrail light and Bermuda blue, supported by high-quality fine cubic zirconia.
Coloured enamel brings the collection to life along with enhancers such as blister pearls and half-round pearls. The collection demands a confident, attentive wearer who is ready to experiment and wants to add an edge to her style quotient.
Chiaro-scuro': Amrich
The birth of textures and silhouettes in the presence and absence of light was the inspiration for the collection. The exquisite natural textiles were a result of the efforts of artisans from across the country, who helped craft each piece to perfection using their ancient hand skills.
